I haven’t bought athletic shoes for nearly three years. Amazingly, that coincides with my Masters program. I’ve never had shoes last for three years, but then again, I don’t think there has been a time in my life where I have been sedentary for so long. Ugh. I am sooo glad that part of my life is over.Anyway…I digress. Sports Authority sufficiently tempted Karen and me with a coupon and a very good sale such that we purchased three pairs of shoes: two pairs for me (running shoes and casual hiking shoes) and one pair for Karen (running shoes). My old shoes are in a sad, fraying, and wholey state. However, with that purchase, I have just learned why women buy lots of shoes…new shoes have totally changed my wardrobe…well…1/3 of my wardrobe. The first time I wore my casual hiking shoes to work with jeans, I felt cool. I felt like everyone must be staring at my new shoes. Oddly enough, all of my coworkers have show strong reserve ‘cause no one has made a comment about them.
The reason I write that my shoes have changed 1/3 of my wardrobe is because I usually wear jeans 1/3 of the time and khakis the rest. That means I wear my shoes 2 or 3 days a week and feel cool during that time.
So…since I have acquired new shoes, what do to with the old, worn-out shoes? I put them in the recycling bin. Is that wrong? Karen scoffed at the idea. I figure they can use my shoes for a running track somewhere or even in the asphalt to fill all the potholes on Fremont’s main streets!
