Scottish Festival

8/3/2008

Karen, Adelle, and I visited the annual Scottish Festival held at Ardenwood Farms in Fremont just over 2 months ago and I am finally going to blog about it (I know that you have all been anxiously awaiting this entry).

This blog can be summed up in one statement: I am glad that I live in the modern era.  We learned how to make fabric and weave cloth.  I was able to wield a sword and other various weapons of hacking (very different from computer hacking).  We learned how to NOT lose fingers, hair, eyes, and life while shooting flint-lock muzzle loader rifles.  Best of all, we got to see some people dressed up in elaborate and CRAZY outfits.  The craziest of the lot can be seen in the photos below.  I’m sure some people enjoy dressing as wenches or wearing kilts, but I think the draconian costume is a little out there.  For starters, the costume would be rather expensive…my guess is $250 for the mask.  Leather armor is quite pricey as well.  In all, he probably spent more than $500 for his elaborate costume.  I wish I had that kind of discretionary income!  Anyway, I’m sure the big payoff for this person is that both children and adults want to have their picture taken with him.
